The Best Low Maintenance Siding Options

Getting new siding is a big decision, and one of the many things you must consider is maintenance: how much work will you need to put into maintaining the health and beauty of your new siding? There are many siding options, which means you’ll be able to choose a siding material that matches your budget, desired maintenance level, and personal opinion on how it looks on your home.

If maintenance is a large part of your decision, you’ll definitely want to consider these low maintenance siding options for your home.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding remains the most common siding material found on homes across the country. This is because for decades it has been the material of choice for new builds, but it also has many other great features. It’s affordable, comes in a variety of colors, and is incredibly low maintenance. There is no repainting that needs to be done, no staining, etc. All that will need to be done with vinyl siding is a quick wash every couple of years (possibly more depending on where you live).

Is there a downside to vinyl siding? Its only weakness is longevity. Vinyl siding will last fewer years than many other siding options. Still, with proper (minimal) maintenance, you should still get about 20 or more years out of your investment.

James Hardie Siding (Fiber Cement)

James Hardie Siding is a fiber cement siding with a backerboard that comes in many different colors and styles. You can learn more about them here. This type of siding is low maintenance and requires only light cleaning throughout the years (like vinyl siding). Fiber cement products offer greater durability and longevity than vinyl siding, but they do come with a larger price tag. Still, if you are looking for a low maintenance siding option, you won’t go wrong with James Hardie Siding.

Metal Siding

Metal siding is a relatively new siding option that is growing in the industry. Metal siding has come a long way over the years. It’s no longer is just for commercial buildings and barns. The materials used can be painted nearly any color and are specially designed to match residential homes. They look great, will not rust, and rarely have to be painted, making them an ideal siding option for homeowners looking for low maintenance options. Metal siding is also more durable than nearly anything on the market. It will last you a lifetime. What’s the downside? It does come with a higher initial cost, but this is offset by how long the material will last.

Stucco

Stucco siding has long been used by homes in coastal areas and in the Southwestern US. It is common on Spanish style and Mediterranean style homes. It’s affordable and semi low maintenance. While it will last you a very long time, it’s not 100 percent maintenance free. There is a chance that cracks can appear in the siding over the years, which will need to be repaired. Still, it makes for a fairly low maintenance siding options, however it’s not entirely common in Midwestern homes.
