Indoor Projects for the Cold Winter Months

Not many people enjoy being trapped inside during the cold winter months. This is especially true in the Midwest, where the winter can seem like it lasts forever. The good thing about being snowed in is homeowners can focus on decorating and renovating the inside of their home, making it a much nicer place to be when temperatures drop.

While big projects like roofing and siding installation and window replacement can be completed by professionals during the winter, here are a few smaller projects you can complete inside your home until it’s time to get outside again.

Painting/Wallpapering

Nothing revitalizes a room like repainting or adding/removing wallpaper. It’s the perfect job for the winter months because it’s easy, relatively inexpensive and can completely change the look of an entire area of your home. Whether you choose to simply touch up with the same color or change it completely, painting is the perfect winter renovation.

Replace Trim/Doors

The trim of a room is not normally something you notice. Make no mistake about it; replacing trim, especially if you change its size and/or color, will drastically change the look of every room in your home. When accompanied by new doors, this change becomes even more apparent. This project can be relatively inexpensive if you do the work yourself. It can also be time-consuming (depending on the size of your home), so it’s up to you whether or not you want to make it a DIY project or invest some money in having a professional brought in to get it done quickly.

Bathroom Renovations

A new sink, toilet, cabinets and shower can really transform an old bathroom into a nice, clean looking room. A small change can make a big difference, but you can also go the extra mile by redoing the flooring with new materials.

Note about kitchen remodeling: while you may think that large kitchen renovations are ideal for the winter months, it may be better to hold off for nicer weather. Renovating a kitchen means losing the ability to cook, and you can always set up a grill in the summer and cook outside while you wait for your kitchen to be pieced back together!

Finish Your Basement

Looking for more space to entertain the family or guests while it’s cold outside? The winter is the perfect time to finally get around to renovating your basement. Whether you are looking to waterproof, finish walls and floors or install something incredible like a home movie theater, now is the time to get it done.

Insulation

Feeling a draft in your house? Noticing that your heating bills are getting higher? The cause may be old or inadequate insulation in your home. It’s not getting any warmer outside right now, so now is the perfect time to have an insulation expert come out to your house and make sure your home is properly insulated.
