Siding Trends to Watch Out for This Year

In another month, we will have completely forgotten that winter was ever here. As homeowners, we will eventually come out of hibernation and take a look at our homes. Many of us will consider upgrading our siding, either for the sheer utility or to keep up with the latest siding trends.

If you are wondering what’s trending in 2017, wonder no more. As siding contractors, we are up to date on the latest colors and materials.

Trending Colors

Choosing a color for your siding is the most fun aspect of exterior remodeling. Every year at the International Home + Housewares Show, the newest design trends are displayed. One of the major players there, Pantone® — the undisputed authority on color — shared what they believe will be the trending colors for siding in 2017.

The way they do this is quite interesting: they match current design trends with a multitude of other factors, which even includes popular colors from the film industry. Some of the more recent films they were inspired by included The Peanuts Movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Disney’s Inside Out.

The colors that they chose this year include a lot of earthy tones, particularly greens. Many of these colors also have hues of gray, a color that is becoming more popular in both interior and exterior color palettes.

You can see how they all look on the LP® SmartSide® website.

Our siding color tip: paint your trim a color that is slightly lighter than your siding. This will help “frame” and accentuate your bold choice of siding color.

Trending Materials

The age-old battle between vinyl and wood siding continues, but there is a new player in the game this year: reclaimed materials. If you’ve tuned into HGTV for even a split second, you will know that rustic look of brick and wood (particularly reclaimed wood) is growing more popular by the day. Besides the trendy and timeless looks they provide, homeowners also revel in knowing that they are reducing their carbon footprint by using these more natural materials. For 2017, look for more and more reclaimed materials to make their way into exterior designs.

But don’t count vinyl out just yet. There are a few reasons why it has remained the most commonly used siding material in the industry, with 36% percent of home still sporting the look:

  1. It is resistant to water, insects and other environmental conditions
  2. It is a very affordable material for most homeowners
  3. It comes in a large variety of colors
